The show first premiered on Nickelodeon on August 12, 1991, as a first episode "Pilot", witch led to a series of half-hour episodes. The show is liked to Geo's World, SpongeBob SquarePants, Mickey Mouse, Looney Tunes. The series aired on Nickelodeon and its affiliates, except in Canada where it has aired on English and Francophone networks due to Canadian television ownership regulations with a total of 578 episodes. This show ressembles World of John and Geo's World.

The success of the show's premiere helped three feature films, Luis's World: The Movie, Luis's World: The Big Picture Show, Luis's World: Boy on the Run, as well as spin-off series, titled Gabriel's Life, which aired from 1998 to 2003.
