Azumanga Daioh: The Animation is an anime series created by Kiyohiko Azuma for TV Tokyo. It was produced by J.C Staff and began on April 8th 2002 and ended on September 30th 2002, running 26 eposodes over a season. It was based on a manga of the same name.
Plot[]
The show follows a group of teenagers; Yomi, Sakaki, Tomo, Osaka, and Kagura in high school, and a child prodigy named Chiyo. The series also includes their teachers: Kimura; the weirdo literature teacher, and the English teacher; Miss Yukari.
Nickelodeon Acquisition[]
On June 6th 2006, Nickelodeon gained the rights to Azumanga Daioh. They aired it a year later on September 6th 2007 on The N. Fans of the show were outraged when it aired on The N due to censored scenes such as the swearing in a few episodes, and most episodes toning down Kimura’s weirdo status, although the outrage died down a few weeks later. The show began reruns on Nicktoons a month later on October 6th 2007. The show finished its run on The N on June 9th 2008. The show aired reruns on Nicktoons until June 16th 2011, where it had it’s last airing. Despite Nickelodeon’s abandonment of the series, it was added to Prime and Paramount in 2020, and had a surprise rerun on TeenNick in 2015.
Trivia[]
- The series has gained it’s own fandom, where fandom members make memes of characters, mostly Osaka, with her being nicknamed “Osaker”.
- Despite Nickelodeon “losing the rights” to the show, it was included in the Mega Nicktoons 35th anniversary bash on August 11th 2025 and is still counted as a Nicktoon to this day due to Ramu Enterprises and Paramount sharing the rights to the show.
